Solar thermal energy is a technology for harnessing solar energy to heat water. Solar thermal collectors come in two forms evacuated tubes and flat plate. As a rule of thumb the evacuated tube systems have significantly higher output per space installed.

On 10 March 2011, the Government announced the details of the Renewable
Heat Incentive policy to revolutionise the way heat is generated
and used. This is the first financial support scheme for renewable
heat of its kind in the world. A second phase of RHI support will
be introduced in 2012.
